Kings Court is a Grade II listed building at the heart of Bath city centre. Originally built as a department store this historic mixed-use building provides retail at ground and first floor, office space at second and third and residential apartments at fourth.
Our brief comprised the introduction of new boutique co-working studios to the second floor and the contemporary refurbishment of eight penthouse apartments to the fourth floor.
The listed façade has been retained with dark bronze metalwork introduced to both the building entrance and roof level to compliment the traditional bath stone masonry. Residential terraces have been refurbished to make the most of the panoramic views over the city centre and Bath Abbey.
The apartment layouts have also been improved to offer open plan living space, connected to both external terraces and internal lightwells for daylighting and outdoor amenity. Bespoke joinery provides much needed storage throughout as well as bringing natural warmth to an otherwise understated palette.
On the second floor, the existing floor plates have been subdivided to provide co-working studios with a variety of breakout and lounge space to suit modern working. Versatile kitchen joinery provides reception space for visitors within each studio in addition to welfare facilities.
Bespoke curtains form flexible meeting space within the studios as well as serving as an acoustic baffle to the street buskers below. A contemporary palette of fern greens fabrics, natural oak and blackened steel present an inviting and modern workspace against the backdrop of this heritage building.
