Redevelopment of Kings Square Community Nursery and Toffee Park Adventure Playground

A new integrated community facility bringing early years, youth and family support services together within a single, accessible hub.

The project is located on Ironmonger Row in the London Borough of Islington, combining the existing Kings Square Community Nursery and the long-established Toffee Park Adventure Playground. TPM Studio was appointed following a competitive process to develop proposals that retain and revitalise the existing buildings while expanding provision to support the council’s Bright Starts and Bright Futures programmes. The brief required a cohesive ‘one stop shop’ for local families, shaped through extensive consultation with council departments, stakeholders and community groups.

The design approach centres on the refurbishment and reuse of the existing nursery building, extended with a new two-storey addition to accommodate Family Hub services. A separate single-storey extension supports the adventure playground, alongside wider improvements to external play and recreation spaces. The scheme removes redundant structures, upgrades the Multi-Use Games Area and redefines site boundaries to improve accessibility, safety and legibility across the site.

The project demonstrates how existing community assets can be carefully adapted to deliver expanded services without wholesale redevelopment. By combining refurbishment with targeted new build, the scheme provides a robust and flexible facility that strengthens Toffee Park’s role as a valued community resource.
