New Work: Protos Energy-from-Waste Facility

TPM Studio appointed by CNIM and Carey’s Civil Engineering to develop proposals for Protos, one of the UK’s largest Energy-from-Waste Facilities processing approximately 600,000 tonnes of waste every year.

The energy facility located in Cheshire along the Manchester Ship Canal is striking in its form where the brief required this landmark development to celebrate the processes and activities within the building. The associated building heights relate to the process equipment within the tipping hall, waste bunker and turbine hall, where the form and shape of the building expands and contracts accordingly.

Our appointment included the re-evaluation of the consented design and formulating proposals to rationalise the previous planning application, whilst maintaining the quality of the original scheme. Working with specialist sub-contractors and consultants we developed buildable design solutions, In response to the challenging geometry of the consented application. The updated design was submitted for planning approval and received consent in the summer of 2021 and is now is the process of being constructed by Covanta.
